Bereng shines despite loss to Zambia

-

The Highlanders box to box midfielder was undoubtedly the best player for Lesotho as he played 80 minutes in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium and opened the scoring for the Crocodiles in the 33rd minute but Fashion Sakala equalised for the hosts just four minutes later. Then in the second-half, Lameck Banda struck a quick-fire brace to put the game beyond doubt as Zambia consolidated their position at the top of Group H. Playing in his now customary number eight role, that essentially sees him operate as the battling and ball winning midfielder, Bereng hardly put a foot wrong and while standing over the ball, Zambia number one goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata failed to handle Tshwarelo Bereng’s effort with authority and watched the ball bounce into the back of the net. In defensive actions, the former Black Leopards player was also impressive as he made many interceptions for his side in what proceed to be a very strong encounter against a very offensive Zambian side led by former English Premiership side Chelsea gaffer Avram Grant.

Injuries

Bereng has been battling with injuries for Inkunzi emnyama this season and the sleek midfielder will be looking at inspiring his side when the league returns next week after the FIFA International break.

Lesotho remains rooted to the bottom of the standings with just one point and their maiden qualification hopes were dealt another blow following their latest setback and face Zambia again on Tuesday. A win for Zambia this week would edge the Zambians closer to a direct qualification for the tournament in Ivory Cost. Highlanders Public Relations Officer (PRO) Kenneth Dlamini could not be drawn for comment as his phone rang unanswered by the time this report was compiled.
