MBABANE – Nhlangano Athletic Club (NAC) reigned supreme in the past weekend’s Athletics Eswatini (AE) Youth and Junior Track and Field national championships.

Athletes from clubs and schools took to the Somhlolo National Stadium tracks, not only for domestic supremacy but in an effort to book a spot in the team to represent the country in the African Championships. AE will select 10 athletes outstanding athletes from this event to represent the country in Zambia for the continental athletics showdown that will start from April 29.

According to the results released by the national athletics governing body, NAC athletes dominated the tracks as it bagged 11 gold medals. It progressed to bag eight silver and six bronze medals, taking their tally to 25 medals recorded from this year event. This confirmed the supremacy in the youth and junior track and field as they occupied the first rank with 192.

Challenged

They were closely challenged by Mankayane Athletics Club during this year’s event. Mankayane achieved six gold, two silver and three bronze medals during the national championships. Correctional Athletics Clubs, who are second on the national ranks, achieved the spot, as they were able to snatch only five gold medals.

The least winner on the track was Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation, who did not win any gold. They were position 16 and above them was Mhlatane Athletics Club who achieved one gold.

Meanwhile, AE is expected to stage the senior championships next month. The names of Team Eswatini to go to Zambia are expected to be released on due course. They have highlighted that they need about E100 000 to realise this dream.
