MBABANE – Fresh from unveiling a new club director over the past week, Tambankulu Callies player Mazwi Sihlongonyane has put the club in hot soup, after attacking a referee.
The Lubombo-based side’s player attacked FIFA-accredited Referee Thokozani Dlamini, during their MTN Premier League game between Mbabane Swallows, which was played at the Prince of Wales Sports Ground last Saturday, which finished 6-0 in favour of the red and white capital city giants.
The Callies midfielder did the unthinkable when he attacked and uttered unprintable words towards referee Thokozani Dlamini, in the game on Saturday which saw the player being shown a straight red card after the incident. He attracted an over E70 000 fines for the Vusizwe Mahlalela – led side should they be hauled before the EFA DC.
Manhandling
Sihlongonyane contravened Articles 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 of the 2022/23 MTN Premier League Rules and Regulations. These articles carry a total fine of E75 000. For manhandling the referee, the box-to-box midfielder contravened Article 10.6.3. Assaulting a referee, PLE official, player, club official, steward, supporter, fan, spectator or the use of excessive force shall be punished with a fine of not less than E50 000 by the DC. In addition, the offending club shall be ordered to compensate the victim for any financial, medical and any other loss incurred due to the assault.
A match official who was in the game who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that the incident on Saturday was included in the match report of the referees and Callies were going to be hauled before the EFA DC. “What happened on Saturday is not good for football and Callies will be hauled before the DC,” revealed the source.
The side may appear before the DC further facing charges of uttering abusive and/or obscene and/or derogatory words, spitting or emission of saliva onto any person or directed towards a person and it is punishable with a minimum of E25 000 by the DC.
