MATSAPHA - Despite the hike in mealie meal prices and empty silos in the country, some corporations are recording positives.

The 1ational 0ai]e &orporation 10&) has generated more than ( 1 million in revenues and made (5.8 million in profit through the sale of its products such as mai]e, beans and rice in the three months, starting from January to 0arch 2023.

This has been disclosed by the &hief ([ecutive 2fficer &(2) of 10&, 0avela 9ilane, in an interview with this publication. :orth noting is the fact that 10& has not made profits in recent years, having made a loss of (22 4 640 in the 2021 22 financial year.

“This is the first time that we have generated such revenues since the introduction of these products,´ he remarked. “I am not satisfied at the moment since these products are not properly distributed across the country.

Products

“$ majority of the activity has been in the 0an]ini 0babane corridor. This is then a sign that there is a lot of work that needs to be done for the products to be evenly distributed nationwide,´ he added.

2ne of the interventions that 9ilane intends to make in order to continue with improved production at 10& is to appoint a marketing and com munications manager at the plant, a position that has been vacant for Tuite some time. This, he says, would be with a view to devising strategies to ensure that there is an increase in market coverage and share for these two commodities.

9ilane was reacting to Tuestions on his progress at the mai]e distri bution entity after 100 days since his appointment as &(2. +e has been holding the fort at the 6tate owned enterprise since January and was officially appointed in February by the 0inister of $griculture, Jabu lani 0abu]a. The &(2 is upbeat in terms of his sales predictions for the upcoming months “The products have proven beyond doubt that they can be a great revenue stream for 10&. Looking at the 4th Tuarter of 2023 when compared to that of 2022 and 2021, there is a lot of growth in sales and profitability; we just need to pay close attention to sourcing, consistency, and the elimination of fraudulent activities that draw the company back.´

The initial objective of establishing the corporation was to guarantee a market to local mai]e farmers at competitive prices and provide good Tuality mai]e meal at reason able prices for ema6wati. These objectives have now changed. 10& is no longer involved in mai]e milling but only in its purchase, storage and marketing.

10& was given the additional mandate of promoting the local pro duction of our staple grains white mai]e, premium rice, sugar beans, and sorghum) in an effort to reduce dependence on imports while ensur ing national food security.

Activities

To this end, the corporation is responsible for offering the input subsidy, tractor hire, and farmer de velopment activities that have seen the country be able to produce more than 0 per cent of local demand in terms of white mai]e, which stood at 127 315 metric tonnes against a total demand of 140 000 metric tonnes during the 2022 23 harvest ing season.

:hen announcing 9ilane¶s appoint ment, 0inister 0abu]a stated that “The goal of attaining food security, in this case considering the local production and marketing of white mai]e, reTuires leadership from both the public side and all players in the value chain.

The 10&, therefore, through its leadership, needed to fully recognise this and utilise available structures and platforms to build an objective coalition and collaborate towards the attainment of this goal. This is over and above the due prudence and care that we have to practise within the cooperation to improve efficiencies and accountability.´

The &(2 added that 10& was on a mission to partner with all relevant and key stakeholders to ensure that the country produces enough white mai]e, beans, and sorghum.

Production

“:e currently have entered into contracts with over 570 farmers; with an average of five hectares per farmer and an estimated yield of four t ha. For beans, the picture looks a bit challenged as compared to mai]e because out of over 2 0ha contracted, only 43.30ha are under production.´

“2ur aim is to increase the yields from 4 0T ha to 6 0T ha or from 0. 0T ha to 1.5 0T ha for mai]e and beans, respectively. :e have also partnered with (6:$'(, I'&(, and <(5F with the aim of ensuring that farmers get seed capital to engage in mai]e and bean production while guaranteeing these organisations ma[imum returns on those loans issued by deducting at source,´ he concluded.
