‘Dead man’ in court

JOHANNESBU­RG - Fraud and murder accused Sibusiso Mahlangu has denied that he made any confession to police about his alleged crimes. Mahlangu was speaking to reporters ahead of his appearance in the Soshanguve Magistrate­s Court alongside his wife Lerato Mahlangu. The couple is charged with murder, fraud and defeating the ends of justice for the 2021 murder of Sibusiso Sithebe. The couple was arrested three weeks ago for Sithebe’s murder, whose body they allegedly buried under the guise of being Mahlangu’s husband. Mahlangu’s husband, who had been declared dead in 2021 after a house fire, was arrested in Hammanskra­al last month after being found with a stolen car.

Elderly woman shot

DURBAN - A KwaZulu-Natal woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition after she was shot while waiting for a bus on the corners of North Coast and Effingham roads, Durban, on Wednesday afternoon. Netcare 911 Spokespers­on Shawn Herbst said the woman was shot in her leg. “Reports indicate an elderly woman was shot in the right thigh while waiting on the side of the road for a bus. When medics arrived on the scene, they found the lady unresponsi­ve on the ground, noting a large open wound and extensive blood loss.”

Escaped rapist rearrested

CAPE TOWN - The second rapist who escaped from the Ngqeleni Correction­al Centre in the Eastern Cape yesterday, Freedom Day, has been rearrested. Department of Correction­al Services Spokespers­on Singabakho Nxumalo said Athini Nothi Mzingelwa was rearrested on Wednesday after escaping with Siyabulela Khohliso on April 27. “The rearrest was effected at about 11am at Mthatha General Hospital. ‘Correction­al Services National Commission­er Makgothi Thobakgale has applauded the assistance of community members who often provide the department of correction­al services with useful leads during manhunts. Such was the case again in recapturin­g Mzingelwa,” Nxumalo said.
