JOHANNESBURG – The fourth State witness in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Mthokozisi Thwala, has described how strangely the footballer’s then girlfriend and mother of his child, Kelly Khumalo, refused to hand over some of his personal belongings to his family, days after the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was shot and killed at her mother’s house in Vosloorus, south-east of Johannesburg.

Thwala continued his testimony in the

Pretoria High Court on Wednesday, led by State Prosecutor George Baloyi. He told the court that he took Meyiwa’s family members, including his brother Stanley Meyiwa, to an apartment in Marlberton where the soccer star lived with Khumalo.

“We were in the company of law enforcement officers, as they spoke to Kelly and I was (standing) on the side. Kelly ended up giving them the ID, but pertaining to Senzo’s clothes, she said she would not give them. It was Senzo himself, who’d tell her through a dream as to what to do regarding his clothes,” he said. Thwala also confirmed that he did not identify a suspect when he was taken to the Jeppe Police Station.

“We were all put in a room and we were shown suspects. I did not point (out) any. After that, I was taken home,” he said.

Thwala also described his relationship with Meyiwa, telling the court that their friendship had started when they played for rival football teams.

He also testified that he kept talking to Meyiwa while they were transporting him to the Botshelong Hospital where he later died. Thwala previously told the court that he had met with Meyiwa frequently, but most notably in September 2014, when he travelled to the offices of Orlando Pirates to deliver his lost cellphone.

Advocate Charles Mnisi, the new lawyer for accused number three, Mthobisi Mncube, previously indicated to the court that he would like to recall witnesses who had already testified, for them to clarify certain aspects of their testimonies.
