KAPHUNGA – Despite nearly 10 years since it was started, the KaPhunga water project is still in the first phase. This was noted by Vusi Vilakati, who is the Indvuna YeNkhunda of Kubuta Constituency. He said he was aware of the water project at KaPhunga. However, he said it was not yet complete.

Vilakati said the water project was started before the current parliamentary term, around 2013. He revealed that about 300 homesteads were expected to benefit and that each contributed about E500 as a waiting fee.

Vilakati said the residents also paid other amounts as a commitment fee, about E20. He said it was understood for some of the residents to express concern about the delay in the functioning of the water project. He also said no one was using the water for now because the project was not complete. “The water has to be cleaned,” he said. Vilakati said the community was advised by engineers that the water was not clean for now and that it had to be cleaned. He said once the cleaning process of the water was set, it would be ready for human consumption.

Vilakati stressed that it was not true that there were already residents who were using the water. Also, he was asked about concerns raised by some residents, that they had been left out of the water project. However, he said according to his knowledge, the project was not completed and that the current setting was the first phase.

Vilakati said every resident would eventually be included in the project. Some of the residents said they did not believe everyone would benefit from the project because the pipes were far from their homesteads. “We were left out,” they said. They said they were concerned because the youth not happy about being left out of the water project. Schools and also the police stations are not spared from KaPhunga water woes. The police post and schools are said to use boreholes. Despite boreholes being used at these institutions, residents there said this was far better than not having water at all.
