BABANE – Relegated Seven Dreams recorded their second of the season yesterday with a game to spare before the MTN Premier League curtains close.
The rookies, who could not sustain the top flight pressure, will be playing in the National First Division (NFD) League next season as per the league’s relegation rules and regulations. With only one game left for them, they stunned fellow relegation candidates Tambankulu Callies with a solitary goal win. Sadly for Callies, it was an own goal by their South African centre back David Molekuli, a former Highlanders player last season.
It was only a game for pride more than anything as both have already failed to cheat the axe and a win for either side changes nothing in terms of the log positions. Seven Dreams only added a second win, taking their points tally to 14, one behind Callies. Meanwhile, the game was marred by an embarrassing moment as it kicked off with a man down on the rookies’ side. It transpired their player Siphamandla ‘Bishop’ Nhlabatsi had no soccer boots so the match had to go on as means were made to get him a pair. They had no substitutes on the bench as they initially came with 11 players but one had no playing boots.
The situation was rescued 10 minutes later when the rest of the players arrived and lent him the soccer boots. However, they still made life difficult for Callies with the man down as they did not concede. Callies were also unfortunate to concede at the stroke of half-time when defender Molekuli’s deflection saw the ball land in his own net. Callies were being pressured as Seven Dreams were in control of proceedings for prolonged periods but not without any response from their rivals. They all had their chances at goal but at the end, it was to be Seven Dreams’ day and winger Jabulani Mavimbela proving a thorn in the flesh for them as he was simply the man to watch in the game.
Jabulani Mavimbela (S. Dreams) - The Seven Dreams winger was a marvel to watch as he tormented Callies defence the whole afternoon. He added numbers upfront and drifted well when defending. He was unlucky not to score in the game.
