MBABANE - “I am not proud of what I did and I know it will sound ridiculous for me to plead for the court’s leniency.”
This was said by Mcebo Sukati when motivating his bail application at the Mbabane Magistrates Court yesterday. Sukati appeared charged with the theft of an Iphone Pro Max and a laptop, which occurred at the Ministry of Education and Training in Mbabane. The property valued at E26 000 belonged to Mduduzi Dlamini.
Sukati implored the court to consider the fact that he cooperated with the police during the course of the investigation. He told the court that he showed remorse by complying with the police.
“I acknowledge the fact that the items cost a huge amount, however, I plead with the court to fix the bail at a reasonable amount so that I can be able to pay it. I intend to plead guilty to the charge. I am not proud of what I did and I know it will sound ridiculous for me to plead for leniency. I plead with the court to exercise leniency on me,” he submitted.
Inconvenienced
He added that he did not wish for the complainant to be inconvenienced further after the recovery of his items.
Magistrate Xolile Nxumalo observed eloquence in Sukati. However, Nxumalo advised him to stick to his application as opposed to involving the complainant. She said the complainant had already been inconvenienced by the theft of his gadgets.
Sukati also applied for a speedy trial, stating that he was prepared to take the blame as the person who committed the offence.
“There will be no need for witnesses because I will plead guilty to the charge. I heard the court allocating another matter to this coming Friday, may my matter be allocated the same date as well,” he submitted.
The court granted Sukati bail fixed at E2 000 on conditions he did not commit a similar offence while out on bail. He was warned to attend all remands and hearings whenever ordered to do so.
His trial was set for May 23, 2023.
