MBABANE – Zesco United look set to achieve their top four finish target.

That is Linda Mkhonta’s team, which is slowly climbing the ladder of Zambia Premier League. Zesco recently beat Nchanga Rangers 3-1. The victory took them to the third spot from sixth with 49 points after 32 games. They are left with two games to go before the curtain falls in the Zambian Premier League. Mkhonta aided in the team’s improved standings after helping them win 3-0 last weekend against Chambishi.

He scored the third goal to inspire his side to their 13th win of the season. Mkhonta joined Team Yaziko, as Zesco are wildely known, at the start of the season after completing a switch from Young Buffaloes. He signed a lucrative two-year deal that earns him over E30 000. Another noticeable impact was brought by former Mbabane Swallows mentor Honour Janza.

Zambia’s football giants, Zesco United became the first Zambian Super League team to attain club licensing requirements. Sponsored by the state-owned electricity company ZESCO Limited, United has in the last two decades been the most successful team in Zambia and the country’s perennial representative in CAF competitions.

With nine domestic league titles to their name, United have become a symbol and model of how a professional club should operate on and off the pitch. This success, however, has not manifested by accident.

The club has structures which include an active secretariat with a ray of qualified professionals who are charged with the responsibility of managing day-to-day operations of the institution.
