Absence of religion from government

- DR CLEOPAS SIBANDA

520 time immemorial, government and governance systems throughout this world were deeply rooted in religion or in religious beliefs, principles, practices, traditions, cultures, norms, visions and values. This gave rise to the widely held notion that public or government leaders or rulers were ordained by the creator, hence they were natural born leaders. $s such, leadership was taken as a natural born blessing and not an acquired skill. +owever, as we now know, leaders are not born, but they are made.

1ot even naturally bestowed, une lected, non interviewed and non re cruited leaders such as Chiefs, .ings and 4ueens are born leaders. ,nstead, all these naturally bestowed public or community leaders are actually de liberately, voluntarily, willing, tacitly, explicitly, implicitly or acquiescently put into place by the people whom they lead.

This is done through tried and tested customary, traditional, religious and cultural principles, practices, norms, visions and values.

6imilarly, leadership skills are also not naturally inborn talents. They are taught, learnt or acquired skills.

Today there are widely held religious beliefs that the creator is the ultimate omnipotent, omnipresent and om niscient supernatural power or force behind everything.

The given name of the creator de pends on the type of religion in ques tion. )or example, in Christianity the creator is called *od, while in ,slam, the creator is called $llah.

Other religions also have got their own names for their creators. 0any if not most people believed that public or community leaders were put into place for them by their creator. ,n religious circles, government or public leaders are taken to be the creator’s doings. +ence the leadership positions of government and other public leaders are deeply rooted in religious beliefs in terms of both their origins and also their modus operandi. *overnment leaders are supposed to lead their people in creator given and creator ordained ways. They are supposed to exude godly demeanours in the way they lead.

+ence they are supposed to always be very understanding, soft, kind, tolerant, loving, caring, considerate, compassionate and full of *od given grace, insight, tolerance, forgiveness, humility, humbleness and everything else which is divine, holy and godly.

INEXPLICABLE

+owever, things have drastically changed these days. :hile in the past, religion or the belief in and worship of a *od or gods, was taken for granted as something which every person did or had to do, today this is no longer the case. Today we have got people who claim to be atheists.

These are people who say that they do not believe in the existence of a *od or gods, let alone in worshipping any *od or gods. 6uch people do not believe in the µreality’ of creation.

They believe in some inexplicable and difficult to comprehend evolu tionary processes of the genesis of life and everything else on this planet and beyond.

+owever, the evolutionary processes which they believe in do not seem to have concrete and plausible starting points.

$nd neither do they have any ev idence of repeatability in terms of re genesis.

+ence their implausibility.

$nyway, what is so interesting about these so called atheists is that Must like their religious counterparts, they say that they also believe in science. $nd yet at the end of the day, science is Must deep rooted knowledge and understanding of how things work in nature and why they work in the way they do.

6cience is knowledge and under standing of the powers of nature. This also includes knowing and un derstanding the fact that as far as science or nature is concerned, there are known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns.

:hat this means is that there are things which scientists definitely know about nature and how and why it works the way it works. Then there are things which scientists know that they definitely have absolutely no idea or no clue about how and why nature works the way it does. $nd then there are also things which scientists do not even know that they do not know about nature or the way things are or work in nature.

$t the end of the day, both atheists and religious believers have got no options but to Must believe in nature, whether that nature can be explained by science or not. 6uch being the case, both atheists and religious believers still believe in one thing or the other about nature.

+ence both groups are still religious in their own different but similar man ners. This is regardless of what each one of them may want to say $nd this is the ironic similarity between religion and atheism. $theism itself is actually Must another type of religion on its own ,t is a different type of religion alright, but still Must another religious value set or system.

PREVAILING

This is the long and short of atheism versus religion. )ull stop.

This then bring us to this current world wide prevailing situation whereby many national governments have abandoned the concept of the religious origins or basis of national governments, government leaders and governing powers.

:hile old style national govern ments and government leaders were considered to be creator or *od given and *od ordained, and while they also viewed themselves as such, today’s national governments and their leaders seem to consider themselves to be largely self made.

8nlike in the past, today’s national governments and their leaders, wheth er elected or not, are no longer *od fearing at all.

5egardless of what they say in pub lic, their actual behaviours betray them.

The things which many national governments and government leaders do on a daily basis these days break all the biblical Ten Commandments and many other commandments in other religious books or doctrines. )or ex ample, the first of the Ten Command ments says that µThou shall have no other gods before me.’ %ut from their daily actions and behaviours, today’s ruling politicians seem to pray to a very different god from the one who liberated people from the bondage of slavery, hunger, diseases and poverty into a life of luxury, freedom, good health and milk and honey. This is because today’s ruling politicians, especially of the black $frican vari ety, have driven their countries into the ground where lack of freedom, slavery, disease, hunger and poverty reign supreme.

The second commandment says that µThou shall not make unto thee any graven images.’ %ut today’s ruling politicians worship material posses sions.

The third commandment says that µThou shall not take the name of the /ord thy *od in vain.’ %ut today’s governing politicians take governance oaths which they do not intend to keep, and actually never keep them at all. The fourth commandment says that ³5emember the 6abbath day, to keep it holy.´ %ut there is not even one day in the lives of today’s governing politicians when they think about holiness or being righteous.

They only think about µbetter’ ways of stealing public funds, or of pro longing their stay in power. The fifth commandment says that µ+onour thy father and mother so that you may have more days on earth.’ %ut today’s governing politicians have no respect for anyone at all.

They only have respect for them selves. $nd they also demand to be respected by everyone else even if and when they do not deserve it. The sixth commandment says that µThou shall not kill.’ $nd yet legalised murder is what ruling politicians perpetrate on their people every day.

The seventh commandment says that µThou shall not commit adultery.’ $nd yet adultery is the middle name of every ruling politician today. 3ow er, money and women are the toys, which they daily play with. The eighth commandment says that µThou shall not steal.’ 6tealing is the main reason why ruling politicians went into pol itics in the first place. $nd stealing continuous is the only thing which they do all the time that they are right in there. The ninth commandment says that µThou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbour.’ /ying is the ruling politicians’ stock in trade. They never run out of lies to tell. The tenth commandment says that ³Thou shall not covert.´ $nd yet Mealousy is a cancer which afflicts every ruling politician. 5uling politicians daily de prive other people of their possessions Must because of Mealousy. They do not want to see anyone else trying to be better than them. They would even steal another person’s wife

TREATISE

The above treatise about the behav iour of ruling politicians versus the biblical Ten Commandments shows that their value sets and systems are no longer religious in nature. 5uling politicians now believe in themselves and themselves alone and no one else. They rule not as if they came into being through *od’s grace, but through their own doings, cleverness or makings.

They have no religiously anchored roots, morals, values or ethics. 3o litical expediency is their modus operandi.

$nything which advances their individual and personal causes and interests will be quickly embraced and taken on board.

:hile anything which does not advance their personal and individual causes or interests would be vigorous ly, violently or even lethally reMected and discarded.

$nd this they would do without any conscience, qualms or compassion at all. +ence today’s national govern ments and their leaders do not hesitate to wage heinous brutality and wars against their own people if that serves their own personal interests.

They also do not hesitate to be sin ners, dictators, tyrants, looters and philanderers. They do not hesitate to beat up, imprison or kill their own people, the very same people whom they purport to serve. Today’s na tional governments and their leaders corruptly and blatantly steal, syphon or loot public resources for their own personal benefits while their own people suffer. They do this without any qualms, shame or guilty conscience at all. Thus, the absence of religion, or more correctly, the absence of reli gious values, principles and practices from national government systems is indeed a very big problem
