MBOMBELA ± The threat of relegation still looms large for Chippa United after they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium yesterday.
A brace from Kamogelo Sebelebele (33’, 52’) put Sead Ramovic’s side in the driver’s seat before Masilake Phohlongo and Nkosikhona Radebe got their names on the scoresheet late on to secure the Rockets’ DStv Premiership status with one game remaining.
A first win in six matches took Galaxy six points clear of the relegation zone and they are now Must two shy of the top eight in 10th position, with Stellenbosch (6th), Sekhukhune United (7th ), Golden Arrows (8th) and Swallows (9th) all tied on 37 points.
The Chilli Boys remain second from bottom in the standings, although Maritzburg United (16th) went level with them and Marumo Gallants (14th) on 29 points following a 1-0 victory over Stellies at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The Mpumalanga outfit had edged closer to safety with a 1-1 against Sekhukhune last time out but it left them without a win in five outings, while Lehlohonolo Seema’s team looked to build on a precious 3-2 triumph over Richards Bay which halted an eight-match winless streak.
DOWN
After going two goals down early on against the Natal Rich Boyz, Chippa found themselves on the back foot once more when Sebelebele latched onto a pass from Bernard Parker and beat Loydt Kazapua from inside the area to opening the scoring in the 33rd minute.
The visitors managed to keep the
score down to a single goal at the break but their task got even harder after Sebelebele struck again seven minutes into the second half following good link-up play with Parker, who registered another assist.
There would be no comeback on this occasion as the second goal seemed to take the wind out of Chippa’s sails and they conceded a third two minutes from time when Phohlongo slotted home from inside the box to open his account for the season.
Radebe then rubbed salt into their wounds with a finish from inside the box in the second minute of stoppage time to ensure the Rockets’ safety.
