university said, “On the issue of non-remittances to financial institutions, the university is committing not to deduct at source on staff salaries. Staff will now make arrangements with their respective banks to make a debit order to pay their loans instead of the university deducting on their behalf at source.”
Investigation
Worth mentioning is that a motion was moved successfully about a month ago, calling for the Minister of Finance, Neal Rijkenberg, to institute an audit investigation into the management of public funds at the university.
The minister had been given 30 days after passing of the motion, to table a report on his findings at the tertiary institution.
The motion was moved by Ndzingeni MP Lutfo Dlamini, who stated that the university had downgraded to junk status and it was a shadow of its former self.
Among the many things that Dlamini highlighted through the motion, was that the institution was withholding PAYE for its employees but same was not remitting to the Eswatini Revenue Service, finding itself in millions of debts.
He said the most painful thing was that there were employees who were nearing the retirement age and they would not have their pension available owing to the financial situation at the university.
He shared that even employees who were paying medical aid did not benefit from same because there was no money from the part of the university, to pay. He also highlighted that some employees were paying their credits through stop orders but because of the financial challenges, they were facing going to jail for failure to commit to payments.
