MBABANE – The Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) is mobilising emaSwati to participate in the upcoming elections under the banner
‘Ungakhetsi njengayitolo’.
This was disclosed by SWALIMO Spokesperson Thantaza Silolo when responding to questions from this publication, following reports that the party was going around the country lobbying people to register to vote in the upcoming general elections. It was gathered that last week some members of the party were seen near the textile firms at Matsanjeni, in Lavumisa, during the lunch-hour lobbying workers to participate in the upcoming elections.
According to some workers, the SWALIMO members were travelling in a seven-seater vehicle branded ‘Makhelwane Simbona Ngetento’.
Thwarted
In an interview with this publication yesterday, Silolo said SWALIMO was on a drive to rekindle the hopes of this nation, which were thwarted by the arrest of active Members of Parliament (MPs).Silolo said their slogan ‘Ungakhetsi njengayitolo’; sought to caution the electorate on opportunistic candidates who were taking people for granted by buying votes with food and unfulfilled, superficial promises, resulting in the crumbling state of affairs in the country.
He said they strongly believed that Parliament remained the only legal tool at citizens’ disposal to advocate for political and socio-economic reforms, resulting in the ideal state of a government for the people by the people with the people. Silolo said they further believed that the country had capable citizens, community leaders and committed potential legislators that would genuinely represent the interests and aspirations of the people without fear or favour. He said it was in that vein that SWALIMO was mobilising the nation to register and participate not to miss an opportunity to exercise their right of determining their destiny.
