Govt to scraS out soPe vacant Sosts

- Thokozani Mazibuko

MBABANE- Government is on a move to scrap-out some vacant positions within the civil service.

These are positions which were left vacant after some civil servant, died while others resigned or were promoted to other government departments.

It is worth noting that abolish/abolishment of a position means the elimination of the position, which had been previously held by an employee and not only a modification in the job task performed or assigned to the employee within his/ her position.

According to the Ministry of Finance’s second quarter report, the country has around 44 000 civil servants and a wage bill of E650 million monthly.

Minister of Public Service Mabulala Maseko has confirmed that there were ministerial audits to determine whether to abolish or retain some positions within the civil service.

“I cannot divulge the number of vacant positions that are being reviewed, but as government we will rely on the reports of the ministerial audits, which are expected to be completed soon,” the minister said. Further, the minister pointed out that due to current times of technology, there were posts which they had noticed as a government there is no need to keep them.

“Due to the advancement of technology, one person now do what four employees were responsible for in the past and through the resignations, retirement, death and dismissals of some civil servants, government now has taken this decision to re-evaluate if these positions are worth retaining. I must say that there are ongoing ministerial audits tasked with the mandate of determining that,” Minister Maseko pointed out on Thursday.

News has established that there are more civil servants who have been stationed in one position for more than three decades.

The allegations are that they have been overlooked when it comes to promotions within the civil service.

Some civil servants who, however, preferred to remain anonymous, had alleged that senior government officials, allegedly placed their own preferred candidates into these positions, something that doesn’t sit down well them.

A senior government official, who also preferred to remain anonymous, has said that it was not true that civil servants were being overlooked when it came to promotions.

“There are a lot of vacant positions that could have been filled a long time ago but the unfortunate part is that most of these civil servants are not qualified as most of them have refused to further their studies and have further ignored government’s in-house training programmes.

This has led us to the position whereby we have to second the recruitment of civil servants from other ministries. It is not like we do not like them or what, but only that these critical positions need to be filled by well-deserving officials, academically,” pointed out the senior government employee, this week.
