Mokwena has revolutionised PSL football – Eymael
TSHWANE – Former Free State Stars Coach Luc Eymael has expressed his admiration for Mamelodi Sundowns mentor Rhulani Mokwena.
After being appointed as Sundowns’ sole Head Coach in October 2022, Mokwena steered the Brazilians to last season’s Premier Soccer League and African Football League titles. The youthful coach is continuing from where Pitso Mosimane left off in helping Sundowns dominate South African football and become a competitor in Africa. “I always follow the PSL and I know that people were criticising Hugo Broos,” Eymael said as per SoccerLaduma.
“I didn’t understand why he was criticise but I guess it was because he was telling the truth. He was telling the truth when he said it isn’t good for the league for big clubs like Chiefs, Pirates, SuperSport and Cape Town City were behind Sundowns by a huge number of points.
“He was saying that it would be good for the league if those teams were up there on the log with Sundowns and there was nothing wrong in what he said. I remember when I was in South Africa, it was like that,” he added.
“Unfortunately, the level of the league dropped. Why? It’s because coaches are being recycled all the time. Mention to me one coach in the PSL who has new ideas. Who? It’s Rhulani Mokwena. He is the only one. Maybe some people don’t like him because he can say whatever he wants to say but he is a good coach. He’s got very good ideas about modern football and so on but other than that it’s just been recycling.”
Sundowns are still in contention for the PSL title and they are also in the running for the CAF Champions League trophy. They also have the Nedbank Cup to play for this term after missing out on the MTN8 and Carling Knockout. The Brazilians resume their PSL campaign by visiting Golden Arrows on February 14.
Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mashego has given his analysis of Sundowns’ goal-poacher Peter Shalulile at AFCON. Throughout the Africa Cup of Nations, Shalulile, representing Namibia, participated in four matches without scoring a goal or registering a single shot on target.
This has led to Mashego implying that Shalulile’s lacklustre performance highlights the significant gap between the Premier Soccer League and international competition.
