In response to these issues, the council has taken steps to engage the community and address the situation.

The CEO Mavuso acknowledged the reports of alleged rape incidents in the area and stated that they had been actively involving community members to combat this problem.

Additionally, residents raised concerns about bars operating beyond their permitted hours, with some establishments continuing to operate even after midnight.

Mavuso highlighted the connection between these latenight activities and the alleged cases of rape, emphasising that criminals take advantage of the extended opening hours.

Closing

The town council had approached bar owners regarding the need to adhere to the stipulated closing times. Despite these efforts, it had been discovered that some bars continued to operate beyond the designated hours, contributing to the ongoing issues.

In an effort to address the concerns raised, CEO Mavuso revealed that the town council planned to introduce community police officers. These community police will collaborate with other stakeholders to assist in preventing crime in the area.

The council is committed to supporting the initiative by providing uniforms and other necessary tools for the community police officers according to the CEO.

Mavuso also revealed that the implementation of community police officers and continued engagement with bar owners demonstrate the town council’s commitment to improving safety and security in Mathendele township. He said efforts to address the issues of rape incidents and the operation of noisy bars are ongoing, with the aim of creating a safer environment for residents.
