81 chief warns

BRUSSELS – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday warned that his organisation’s Palestinian refugee agency cannot be replaced, even as it faces criticism after 12 staffers were implicated in Hamas’s attack on Israel.

Several countries -- including the United States, Britain, Germany and Japan -- have suspended funding to the UNRWA agency, and Guterres has led crunch talks with donor countries to have payments reinstated.

“No other organisation has a meaningful presence inside Gaza -- and nothing compared with this situation. So there is no other organisation that would be able now to replace” it, Guterres told a media briefing.

Kunene sues councillors

JOHANNESBURG – The City of Johannesburg confirmed that MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene had opened a criminal case against three Democratic Alliance (DA) councillors who allegedly posted his contact details on social media platforms.

Kunene said this posed a security risk for him and exposed his family to possibilities of attacks and theft.

“It is the severity of their crime (violation of the POPI Act) that has left me with no option, but to ask for the intervention of law enforcement agencies,” Kunene said in a statement.

EASTERN CAPE – Two Eastern Cape women who unwittingly became involved with a dating scammer, losing their pensions to his schemes, have obtained justice.

Lucious Charles Saba, a Tanzanian, has been sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment by the King William’s Town regional court.

The retirees were swindled after the 30-year-old convinced them to cash in their pension payouts and invest them in a fictitious company.

“He managed to convince them to withdraw their pension benefits and give it to him ‘to invest’. They did so, and one withdrew R1.6 million and the other R900 000.”
