TIPS TO STAY SAFE DURING, AFTER STORMS:
When a storm approaches, it’s crucial to prioritise safety for you, your family and your property.
Here are ten ways to help you stay safe and prevent becoming a victim of a severe storm:
● Stay Informed: Keep track of weather updates and advisories.
● Prepare a disaster kit: Create a disaster preparedness plan that includes a survival kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights and a first aid kit.
● Secure your home: If your house has storm shutters, ensure they are closed and fastened. Secure or bring inside any loose objects that could become projectiles in high winds.
● Avoid electrical equipment: Do not use electronic devices that are plugged into outlets. Lightning can travel through electrical systems, so it’s best to avoid using appliances during a storm.
● Stay away from water: Avoid contact with water during a thunderstorm. Do not bathe, shower or wash dishes, as lightning can travel through plumbing.
● Take shelter: If you are indoors, stay away from windows and avoid concrete floors and walls. If outdoors, seek refuge in a sturdy building or a hard-top vehicle. Avoid open spaces and tall, isolated objects.
● Have an evacuation plan: Know the safest route to take if you need to evacuate and make sure all family members understand the plan.
● Beware of flooding: Flash flooding is a significant risk during storms. If water is entering your home, turn off the main power source to prevent electrical fires and use towels to prevent further water damage.
● Protect yourself from lightning: If caught outside and unable to reach shelter, find a low spot away from trees and bodies of water. Crouch down, but do not lie flat on the ground.
● Post-storm safety: After the storm has passed, wait for official word that it’s safe to go outside. Be cautious of downed power lines and damaged infrastructure. Inspect your property for damage once it’s safe to do so.
