- BY MELUSI MKHABELA

MBABANE – Swazi Slojos athlete Nkosinathi Msibi was the champion of the 2024 Mlilwane Resolution Run, which was held at the Wildlife Sanctuary yesterday.

The athlete completed the 21km category of the half marathon which was sponsored by dairy producing company Lactalis Eswatini in an impressive time of 1:21:40hrs.

The weather condition was favourable, with overcast skies providing a welcome relief as the sun emerged after most participants had completed the race. Following his victory, Msibi expressed that the 21km distance was relatively easy for him due to his thorough preparation, particularly emphasising that the challenging hills posed no significant obstacle. He also noted that this year’s competition appeared less formidable, with the second-place finisher crossing the line almost six minutes after him. Thokozani Dlamini secured second place with a time of 1:26:58hrs.

PREPARES

“Today’s (yesterday) race was very easy because I’m one person who prepares for such events. What I can say is that the hills were a walk in the park because I have been working on them,” Msibi said.

In addition to his performance, Msibi commended the wellmarked route for the 21km race, highlighting the improved signage compared to previous editions.

The half marathon, hosted by Big Game Parks, witnessed a significant increase in participation compared to previous editions, with over 700 participants in attendance, setting a new record for the event. Lactalis Marketing Officer Lucky Phiri expressed gratitude to Big Game Parks for hosting the successful event and promised that they would continue supporting the initiative.

“Thank you Big Game Parks for hosting yet another successful event. It has already been mentioned that the numbers were almost double for this edition, which is commendable. Continue to buy your favourite Lactalis Eswatini products, your yoghurts, your cheeses, your Steri Stumpies and continue to enjoy the beverage, because the beverage supports you back,” expressed Phiri.

Colani Gama, speaking on behalf of Big Game Parks, expressed gratitude for the high turnout and thanked the event’s sponsors for their contributions. Gama emphasised the attractive prizes; including trophies made by Ngwenya Glass and encouraged families to take advantage of Mlilwane’s offerings for quality time together.

IMPRESSIVE

Zakhele Dlamini, President of Athletics Eswatini (AE), lauded the impressive event turnout and perfect weather condition. He also noted the growing interest in long-distance running events like marathons, highlighting the accessibility of marathon running compared to track and field events which require specific skills. Dlamini emphasised the inclusive nature of marathons, where participants can walk and enjoy the experience without stringent skill requirements.
