‘E22k fee for business land at KaLanga’

SITEKI – Residents who own businesses in communitie­s under KaLanga Umphakatsi claim to have been subjected to pay E22 000 for being allocated land for their respective business interests.

A business owner who asked not to be named in fear of victimisat­ion, said they raised concerns on the mat ter with the chiefdom inner council, but have not been assisted to get recourse on their grievance.

7he business owner shared that after approachin­g the chiefdom to seek an official stamp and letter in e[panding her e[isting business, she was told by the inner council

umphakatsi had communicat­ed that all businesses that had been allocat ed land during the reign of the late &hief 0limi 0a]iya, were e[pected to pay the amount. 6he mentioned that she had enTuired about what had prompted the chiefdom to demand that amount. 6he said to the best of her knowledge, she paid the reTuired cow for being allocated the land for her business.

Noteworthy, is that &hief -o]ane 0a]iya was blessed by 7heir 0aM esties, three decades after the demise .$/$1*$ of his father.

7he latest developmen­ts take place at the backdrop of complaints from Nyakeni residents, who were told to pay E per home for the con struction of the E

Umphakatsi.

7he residents were also demanded E for the chiefdom¶s operations and E for building a home on a field. At KaLanga, early this year, the chiefdom, in a bid to conduct constant patrols during the day and night to curb criminal elements under the umphakatsi, tenants were e[pect ed to contribute E per house on a monthly basis.

³As a widowed business owner, , survive through the money generated by my business. :e are complainin­g that we have been made to pay such e[orbitant amounts by the chiefdom, despite that we paid the reTuired cattle for that allocated land for our businesses. :e are appealing to the country¶s authoritie­s to intervene, as some of our businesses have not been doing well in cash flow, following the emergence of the &29,' pandemic,´ said the business owner.
