BUHLENI – Furious transport operators are demanding the abolition of what they claim to be an overstayed committee, calling for the election of new representatives.

In an effort to demonstrate their seriousness on the matter, the transport operators have reportedly formed another committee to oversee the operations of the bus rank.

The operations are overseen by the Buhleni Transport Association which has a select committee for this.

According to sources, the newly-formed bus rank committee has taken on the responsibility of managing the terminus and ensuring that all vehicles are monitored. It is worth noting that each bus rank traditionally has its own committee in charge of such operations.

One of the key responsibilities of these committees is the collection of fees at the bus rank.

It also ensures that workers, including cleaners, are paid.

As part of their duties, the committees are also tasked with regulating the bus rank marshals. Whenever a vehicle departs the bus rank for its designated route, the driver is expected to pay a certain amount of money. The drivers pay about

E20 at the beginning of the day when they leave the bus rank and this amount is then reduced to E10 every time they pass through the terminus. According to some of the members of the transport association, they want the current committee to be disbanded. They said this was due to the fact that the committee has overstayed its welcome by almost 10 years. According to the members, the committee is only supposed to be in office for three years yet the current one had exceeded its term of office by seven years.

Wandile Shabangu, who is the secretary of the current committee which is wanted out confirmed that there had been some misunderstanding when he was reached for comment. He said a meeting will be held to discuss the way forward on March 16, 2024.

He, however, disputed some of the allegations by members who stated that the committee was to blame for the misunderstanding at the bus rank.

This was after the members blamed the committee for a standoff last Wednesday whereby the entrance of the bus rank was blocked to prevent vehicles from leaving.

Shabangu said the reason for this had nothing to do with the issues between the current committee and some members.

He said the reason for the standoff was caused by disagreement regarding vehicles that move from Matsamo to Manzini via Buhleni Bus Rank.

Also, Shabangu confirmed that some transport operators had
