Tell us your full name, age and where do you reside?

“My name is Gcinile Mbukwane and I am 28 years old. I am originally from Malindza in the Lubombo Region, but I currently reside in Matsapha.”

When did you start training and what was the motivation behind?

“I started training religiously in 2020. The motivation behind this was to look good and have a positive body image, for health

reasons and it was the ultimate fun thing to do in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

What was your weight then compared to now?

“Between 2020 and 2023, I weighed 57kg, and I currently weigh 59kg.”

What sort of lifestyle contributed to your weight gain?

“In the last quarter of 2023, I was not exercising as frequently as I needed to, I also wasn’t eating well. Another factor to consider is that I used to do a lot of cardio back then (marathons to be specific), which made me leaner while right now I’m focused on bodybuilding and I’ve gained muscle weight.”

What kind of exercises do you do?

“I can say I am an all-rounder. I do cardio, I work on my legs, arms, core and lately, I am falling in love with toning my back. I recently joined a class of Pilates which is ideal for my core and mental relaxation.”

Do you stick to a specific nutrition programme?

“I would be lying if I’d say I am, but I am still cautious of what goes into my mouth. I limit my sugar intake; I try consuming small portions.”

What challenges do you normally encounter in keeping up with your new lifestyle and how do you handle them?

“One of the major challenges is my hectic work schedule while I’m immobile. Sometimes I must miss the gym because of work. On the positive side, I walk a lot so whether I did go to the gym or not, my body gets subjected to some form of physical activity.”

How has your life improved so far and how do you impact the people, especially ladies in your circle or community?

“Those who know me can attest to the fact that I am almost always happy, gym plays a vital role in stabilising my mood. I rarely get sick and if I do get sick, I get well before needing medical attention so I can safely say exercising my body has a positive impact on my well-being.”

What are your weight and fitness goals given a certain time frame? How hard or easy will it be to achieve that goal?

“My current weight goal is to weigh 57kg by mid-May. As for my fitness, the goal is to consistently show up at the gym and put in the work. I believe from there; I will tone up perfectly.”

What advice can you share with other people who face weight problems but lack the courage to start exercising and make it a lifestyle?

“This will sound cliché, but I’d say focus on showing up at the gym, put in the work, don’t monitor the results because they may be demotivating. Everyone is unique so it may take a while to achieve your goals. Eating well plays a huge role in weight loss. Limit your alcohol intake and get adequate sleep. Most importantly, set realistic attainable goals for yourself.”

What is your motivation slogan?

“Show up for yourself as frequently as you can, your body will thank you.”
