National Women’s Sports Day: Free registration
SUNDAY greetings! On this lovely day, which the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it. By the time of going to press yesterday morning, one of our recognised National Sports Associations, Athletics Eswatini had their Annual General Meeting (AGM), in Manzini at the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) boardroom.
Although, we could not sit through the meeting through all of it, we do wish and hope that the sport was the winner at the end of the day. We were inspired by the association’s president, Zakhele Dlamini’s remarks. In his address to clubs, Dlamini appealed for calm and tolerance from the membership. He did note that whilst some may not necessarily like the executive style of leadership, it doesn’t mean they should fight. He rightly observed that the sport should be the winner and not individuals. We could not agree more.
WE DIGRESS
As today’s headline suggests, it pleases us at the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC), to announce to our people that registration to participate in the National Women Sports Day, is absolutely free of charge. Our invite to corporate entities that want to participate in what will surely be a historic day, still stands. We only require a donation of sanitary pads or the equivalent for companies to take part. The event is billed for April 6 at the Technical Centre in Lobamba.
Why women? Why a sports day for them instead of men?
Well, there are a lot of factors that have prompted this. Top of the list however, is the fact that women are amongst the most marginalised groups in our society. This in essence means that the fairer sex struggles to get opportunities to participate in sports. There is still the perception that a woman’s place is in the kitchen. That is no longer the case. Women deserve a fair chance of partaking in sports as well.
This is their opportunity. We have presented them with the perfect chance to do just that.
We do hope our corporates will not deny our mothers and sisters such a golden opportunity.
SHUKUMA MOVES TO HHOHHO
Our fourth edition of the spectacular programme moves to the Timphisini Inkhundla, in the Hhohho region. This follows the tremendous success of the last three Shukuma outreach programmes held this year. The last was hosted by the Sandleni Inkhundla, in the Shiselweni region. Our programme has evolved to become a premium platform for mass public engagement. The people of Timphisini and surrounding areas should come prepared for a day of fun activities. We will as usual be bringing along both our social and corporate partners to the event. Our National Sports Associations will also be present.
We expect the people of Timphisini to come in numbers for this special edition. Expect partners like MTN Eswatini, NERCHA, Breast and Cervical Cancer Network, Diabetes Eswatini, Royal Eswatini Police, Ministry of Health, Standard Bank, Manila Mahewu and many more others. This is what we do. It’s what defines us. We want to see a healthy nation. A healthy, winning nation is a happy one. Talking of winning, we heartily congratulate both Green Mamba and Mbabane Swallows for making it into the finals of the Ingwenyama Cup. The semi-finals were played last Sunday at the Somhlolo National Stadium. After hard fought victories over army side Young Buffaloes and Mbabane Highlanders respectively, both teams made it to the final. We were also happy to see the soccer fans in attendance on their best behaviour. This is what we want to see in our stadia. Violence has no place in our sport.
I will talk to you again next week, until then sports for all; sport for life!
