UEDF shoot to top spot

- BY NIMROD HLOPHE

MBABANE – The Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) has boldly staked its claim in the SBS Elite Netball League, sending a strong message to the rivals, REPS and Correctional.

UEDF has risen to the occasion, seizing the pole position for the first time in the Swaziland Building Society (SBS) women’s league. They are six points ahead of their nearest rivals and the reigning champions, the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS). Meanwhile, first round runners-up Correctional team have long dominated the netball courts.

UEDF Head Coach Roster Lukhele women’s team has played two games more than most of the league teams. Lukhele voiced firm determination to maintain their lead. “I’m really proud of the progress the ladies have made even in my absence. We’re a few games ahead, but our sights are definitely set on the title. We respect our opponents, but it’s time we challenged the dominance of REPS and Correctional,” Lukhele stated.

She further said bidding for glory requires some intensified training to surpass well-assembled teams that have been consistent like Correctional. She emphasised the need for a sharpshooter to complement what she considers the best defence in the country. The army side netball’s outfit were bronze medallists in the previous round.

Meanwhile, in the men’s league, Correctional and REPS are tied at four points each, with the latter trailing behind on goal advantage. UEDF is perched on fifth place, while Ballbusters languish at the bottom with a single win after three matches.
