Gto the athletics family! We are positive that everyone is eagerly anticipating the next move following the abandonment of the Athletics Eswatini annual general meeting (AGM) last week Saturday in Manzini, at the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC).

It should be clear however, from the onset that the President, Zakhele Dlamini, had all the right to call off the meeting. There was absolutely no way, the meeting could have abandoned the set agenda to entertain personal feelings and egos. It should be noted that each and every AGM has a set agenda, which must be followed.

On seeing that a section of the membership was hell bent on ignoring the agenda, our leadership had no choice but to call off the meeting. It is a pity that in his presidential address, Dlamini had highlighted that members tend to misunderstand policy matters and, therefore, led astray. Policy matters remain just that, policy matters and they cannot be tackled in any other form.

We have repeatedly pleaded with the members to equip themselves by reading and understanding the Athletics Eswatini constitution. The sport should be bigger than any individual bekunene.

Trying to settle personal scores and differences at the expense of the sport should not be happening. At the end of the day, we do not want our athletes to suffer because they are the most important in our sport. These are the people we want to empower and to see doing well internationally.

It pains us to note that we have come far only for a few elements to sow seeds of trouble and sadly seemingly get away with.

We want to, nontheless assure all athletics lovers in the kingdom and beyond our borders that no one can kill athletics. We will await direction from World Athletics on the next step to take. People should be aware however, that a different leadership style does not necessarily mean bad leadership. Tolerance and unity will see us achieve far greater things.

As noted by the mother body of all sports, the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC), local sports are poorer without the late Eswatini Cycling Association Treasurer, Shirley Kenny – Motsa.

Motsa’s death has indeed sent shock waves, not only just in our beautiful kingdom, but throughout the region as a whole. She sadly passed away last week Saturday morning after she was hit by a truck in Mbabane.

Needless to say, that we at the Athletics Eswatini office have been left shocked and deeply traumatised by the untimely passing of the seasoned athlete. Motsa was everything we want from locals –a fitness fanatic and enthusiast.

Her lifestyle was a true testimony of some who ate, breathed and slept athletics. What’s more, Shirley was both a competitive and accomplished cyclist. She was also a Golden Foot Athletics Club member, who never shied away from the demanding physical activity associated with road running.

We also noted that like a true soldier she passed away in the line of duty. She passed away doing what she loved wholeheartedly. We are deeply saddened by her tragic and untimely demise. We will always remember her fondly, as one who epitomised an athlete’s lifestyle.

“In times like these, words really fail us. Our heartfelt condolences go to her husband, another sportsman at heart, Golden Foot Athletics Club, the entire cycling fraternity in the country and beyond our borders and of course to everyone who knew her. A gentle giant has been taken away from us too soon. It is true that cycling and indeed athletics will never be the same without her. Our sports are actually poorer without her.

“We pray to the Almighty God to bandage those bleeding hearts and to give each and everyone of us the courage to soldier on during such times. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
