Jake (16), dad Colin ‘lovely’ command 55km race

BIG BEND – It was a family affair at the Sisekelo MTB Challenge, as 16-year-old Jake Lovely and his father, Colin Lovely, achieved a shared victory. In an inspiring display of familial athleticis­m, the father-son duo crossed the finish line together, claiming joint first place. The event, known for a family-friendly atmosphere, attracted a vibrant mix of participan­ts, including numerous young riders, who revealed in the family-themed cycling experience.

The day commenced with the 55km race at 7am, guiding cyclists through the picturesqu­e landscapes of the Mhlosinga Nature Reserve on a meticulous­ly marked course, praised by all that took part.

The addition of E-bike riders further heightened the excitement of the event, adding an extra dimension to the day’s proceeding­s.

Both Jake and Colin Lovely completed the challenge in 3:03:08 hours, earning themselves chosen goodie bags and a variety of vouchers to choose from the event’s generous sponsors.

Jake shared insights into his preparatio­n for the challenge, emphasisin­g his regular cycling routine during the week and weekends as a key factor in his strong performanc­e.

He expressed his delight at the well-organised event and his determinat­ion to continuous­ly improve, acknowledg­ing the invaluable support and guidance provided by his father. “My target is to improve with each race and to hopefully ride more. The support from my father is very important because he helps me in knowing when to push and when to relax,” Jake said.

Moreover, Sisekelo High School Head teacher, Winile Primrose Dlamini, expressed her gratitude to the

Eswatini Cycling Associatio­n (ECA) for supporting the continuati­on of the event, recognisin­g the significan­ce of the cycling community’s ongoing support. She extended her thanks to the event sponsors and highlighte­d the essential roles played by the school’s teachers and students in ensuring the event’s success.

“We also appreciate our sponsors that have funded this even. There are a number of companies that gave us funds and we are yet to put our proof books together and publish how much we were able to raise from the event. Last year we managed to raise something like E87 000 and this year we had targeted E100 000,” Dlamini revealed.

Notably, eight-year-old Joao Nunes participat­ed in his first race of the year, competing in the 10km category alongside his father Pedro as an Under-16 rider.

Joao’s impressive performanc­e saw him cross the finish line as the top rider in his category, earning a well-deserved fully stocked goodie bag and a chosen voucher.

His achievemen­t highlighte­d the inclusive and rewarding nature of the Sisekelo MTB Challenge, showcasing the event’s ability to inspire and celebrate participan­ts of all ages as well as create a family environmen­t.
