SPORT FOR ALL: SPORT FOR LIFE

Sport awards antincipation

- (With Dumisani Ntiwane ESRC Media Officer)

THIS is the day, which the Lord our God has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it! Sunday greetings!

We at the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) are overly excited and happy to announce that our organisation will be hosting the National Sports Awards. Yes, it’s that time of the year again where we celebrate honour and recognise excellence in sports.

Many will recall that last year we hosted the National Sports Awards in March at the Happy Valley Hotel. This time, the Tums George Hotel in the country’s hub, Manzini will be hosting the event. It is slated for next Wednesday.

The National Sports Awards is the ultimate reward programme of sports in the kingdom. It seeks to reward meritorious service to sports by all sport practitioners. From sports administrators to the athletes, coaches and even sports journalists, everyone is rewarded accordingly. We are happy with the response of our recognised national Sports Associations that have already made their nominations for this all-too important exercise. We will hopefully reveal all the nominees early next week, just before the awards.

However, do expect to see categories such as the Outstanding Senior Sportsman, Outstanding Senior Sportswoman, and Outstanding Sportsman with a Disability, Outstanding Sportswoman with a Disability, Outstanding Junior Sportsman, Outstanding Junior Sportswoman, Outstanding Sports Leader and Outstanding National Sports Federation, to mention just some of the categories that will be on the stage on Wednesday.

Expect a glitzy affair as always. As stated in the opening lines, this is the ultimate reward programme of sports in the kingdom. There can be no greater reward, really. There can be no bigger stage for recognition. RIP Shirley

In other platforms, we have already voiced out our shock and dismay at the tragic and untimely demise of Shirley Motsa.

We did say that she epitomised what we always preach to our people- healthy living. We are at a loss for words, really. She was an avid member of the Golden Foot Athletics Club, a seasoned and accomplished cyclist, founding member of the NewComm Wheels. As the bowels of the earth open up to swallow one of the most prominent sportspersons the country has ever produced, local sports will be poorer without her.

Our heartfelt condolences to her husband the likeable Mbusi, Golden Foot Athletics Club, the cycling fraternity, where she was a rider and treasurer and friends as well as relatives.

May the Lord God comfort everyone whose life she touched in one way or the other, May her soul rest in peace. Athletics family find peace

We were obviously disturbed by events of the last week after the Athletics Eswatini abandoned their Annual General Meeting.

We obviously cannot take sides in this matter, but we do wish the membership would find common ground and resolve the impasse.

It is a tragedy when things like these happen because in most instances, it is the athlete that suffers the most. Let us resolve all differences amicably. Let us not destroy a sport that has taken so long to build.

Until next week, sports for all; sport for life!
