SITEKI – Business mogul Moses Motsa has pledged to support a race that will be staged in honour of the late Shirley Motsa.

Motsa revealed his support for the race, which was proposed by various speakers to commemorate the late seasoned cyclist and runner, who tragically passed away after being hit by a truck along the Manzana Road in Mbabane last Saturday.

The idea of the race in honour of Motsa was first raised by the master of ceremony, Simphiwe Motsa, who appealed to the cycling and athletics community to host an annual race in respect of the former National Maize Corporation (NMC) employee. Thokozani Dlamini of NewComm Wheels expressed their club’s willingness to consider staging a race in honour of Motsa, stating: “We want to thank, even though we have been tasked with staging an annual race named after Shirley. We are positive that this will become a reality in the near future.”

In response to the proposal from various speakers, the businessman pledged to support the race, stating, “I want to make a pledge that every race they will host every year, I would support it,” much to the applause of the mourners.

Motsa also described Shirley as a level-headed person who was able to mediate during family conflicts. Other speakers from the sports fraternity, professionals, friends, family and church representatives all described her as a people’s person who was good with children.

It’s worth noting that Shirley will be the second Eswatini Cycling Association (ECA) member (treasurer) to have a race in her honour, following the late former ECA) President, Mandla Simelane. The race in his honour is called the Mandla Simelane Road Classic, which was launched in 2021.
