TIPS FOR BATHING YOUR DOG.

-

Brush: Give your dog a good brush before and after the bath.

Timing: Bath in warm, sunny weather so he can sun-dry afterwards. Bath at midday so there is plenty of time to dry properly. If your longhaired dog is not dry to the skin an hour after the bath, you should consider blow-drying. Set the hair-dryer on LOWEST, so as not to burn your dog’s skin. Most dogs don’t like the sound and feeling of hairdryers, so sun-drying is best.

The right shampoo: Dogs have a different skin pH to humans. Human shampoos and soaps can be harmful to dogs. Use a dog shampoo recommended by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions on the shampoo bottle. Dogs have died because of incorrect use of shampoos.

Location: Use a bathtub, basin, outdoors tub or get in the shower together. Use warm or tepid water as for a baby, NOT cold water. If you are bathing a small dog in a basin or sink, be very careful that he doesn’t jump out. Use a rubber or other nonslip mat in the bathtub or shower. If he slips or hurts himself, future bathing will be a mission.

Be prepared: Have everything you need ready before you start. Brush, shampoo, clean facecloth to wipe his face, eyes and ears (do NOT get any soap or water near these areas), towel, non-slip mat.

Lather and scrub well: Dilute the shampoo in a jug of water to allow it to spread well. Wet the dog all over (except the head), apply shampoo then rub him all over gently but firmly. Do NOT wash his face, eyes or ears. Wipe over later with a damp cloth only. Rinse well: Rinsing is the most important part of washing. Soap residue can irritate the skin and cause inflammation. If you can, use a spray hose attachment on low pressure. Shaking: When taking your dog out of the bath, keep your hand on the back of his neck to stop him shaking and towel-dry him. Then put him on a lead and take him for a brisk walk or run in the garden to dry him off before letting him go – because the first thing he’ll do is roll! Lots of love: Most dogs hate baths, so give him lots of reassurance and praise before, during and after the bath. Once he’s out, give him his favourite treat.

Never bath cats.
