Grixxly tops radio charts

- BY NOMBUSO DLAMINI

MBABANE – Eswatini’s firebrand Hip Hop producer and artist, Grixxly of ‘Brema to Rio’ fame, is back on familiar territory; the top of the charts, with his latest offering, ‘Musa weNkhosi’.

The song moved two places up from number three the previous week to displace Lyrikal Busta’s ‘My Lavoo’ at the top. The latter had been at the chart pinnacle for three weeks in a row until last Friday.

“Nothing is as pleasing as seeing local records leading the pack in this dog-eat-dog countdown, as this affirms that Eswatini artists are now holding their own against regional and international ones. That is the standard, and it should never be lowered,” opined chart show curator Bongani ‘DJ Tizalami’ Dube. Tizalami described Grixxly’s music as “a breath of fresh air” and said the artist is bound to become the country’s next best thing.

“He is in his element, and ostensibly, nothing will stop him. Grixxly is already an emerging heavyweight in the industry, and we can only but predict a bright future for this young man,” he added.

Breaking new ground, Grixxly took a distinctive approach to his sound on ‘Musa weNkhosi’, as he intermittently incorporated his mother tongue, siSwati, into the verses, creating a rich and authentic connection to his roots. He delved into a narrative centred around the profound theme of God’s grace. The lyrics poignantly express his unwavering belief that as long as he is surrounded by this divine grace, every aspect of his life will align, regardless of the time it takes. Through introspective verses, he shares a resolute conviction that, even as he spearheads the progress of his home country, Eswatini, the journey is destined to unfold positively under the guidance of God’s grace. This single not only marks Grixxly’s first official drop in 2024, but also represents a significant evolution in his artistic expression and storytelling.

Meanwhile, Lyrikal Busta’s runaway hit ‘My Lavoo’ settled for the second spot, while South African duo TitoM & Yuppe moved down to three from number two. Two Eswatini Hip-Hop artists, Extasy and Oriiginelle, debuted their new singles in the charts. The former’s new single ‘Moria’ debuted at number 20, while Oriiginelle debuted ‘Expensive Hunger’ at number 19.

The chart show airs Thursdays at 4pm and Fridays at 8pm on EBIS.
