Two documents were passed at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee presided over by general secretary Xi Jinping. One is about integrated military and civilian development, the other on the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

There is a pressing need for integrated military and civilian development, as it is related to the national security and prosperity, according to a circular issued after the meeting. Economic growth and defense build-ups should both be achieved in a coordinated, balanced and compatible way, the circular said.

Green development

The country should follow a green path in the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt with attention given to environmental protection along the river, the circular said. The economic belt should reinforce innovation, shut down out- dated capacity, and give full play to the market mechanism, according to the circular. Rising in southwest China’s Yunnan Province and emptying into the sea at Shanghai, the Yangtze River Economic Belt involves nine provinces and two municipalities.

It covers an area of 2.05 million square kilometres and accounts for more than 40 per cent of the country’s population and economic aggregate.
