Gymnasium renovation put on hold
Renovations for the FMF Gymnasium have been put on hold because of the recent devastation caused by Topical Cyclone Winston. The Fiji Sports Council in a press release has confirmed to SUNsports yesterday that the operational funds are currently on hold until further notice.
“The council had initially scheduled the facility to undergo re-development works which was to start in March through to October, this year,” stated the release.
It also indicated the undertaking of the re-development works was based on the Council’s budgeted allocated funds approved during Government’s budget announcement. However, the plan had to be put on hold because of unforeseen circumstances. “The FMF Gymnasium will not be closing until further notice. Given the recent devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston and nationwide relief works to be undertaken, these operational funds are currently on hold until further notice. Pending approval from Government on funding for 2016 to 2017, we hope to proceed with this CAPEX project from September through to April 2017.” The FMF Gymnasium, the release stated, is one of the oldest facilities to date so the planned makeover would be something to look forward to. “The FMF Gymnasium is simply next in line among our 18 facilities around the country due for a renovation. We hope to revamp most of the existing structures, which include flooring, roofing and change room repairs as well as a redesign to this facility to add more convenience to our office space and customer hosting needs that are demanded for a premier facility.” The planned closure was to be between eight to nine months.
