Tongan women’s team won their first win of the 2016 Handy Finance Oceania Volleyball Championships beating a Samoa B side 3-0 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva last night. Samoa looked to be the favourites to win with their solid blocks and spikes but they lacked consistency as they phased out towards to the end. This allowed the Friendly Islanders to win all three sets, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-12 respectively. Tonga coach/captain Tupou Fonua said though this was the first time for the team to take part at the regional competition, she was very pleased with the team’s performance. “It was a really good game for us because it’s actually our first time playing together,” Fonua said. “Four of us are from New Zealand and the rest are from Tonga so that was actually a great experience for us and even better that we won. “We are hoping to get into the top four. It’s going to be a bit hard though because we have been out of the international scene for six years now.

“It’s our first time coming back so we don’t know what the standard of the other teams are so given the time we will take it and improve and work hard. “I’m happy with our performance today, we played like a team and I am just really happy. “But we still made a few mistakes like serving errors and our passing so we will go back to the drawing board and come back stronger.” Tonga will take on the Fiji Whites today at 3pm at the Vodafone Arena.
