The Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar, Voreqe Bainimarama, yesterday announced that the Penang Mill will not be repaired in time for the 2016 crushing season. However, Government will bear the entire cost of transporting cane for all cane growers in the Penang Mill area to the Rarawai Mill for processing. “In the wake of Cyclone

Winston, I saw for myself the wide-spread devastation wrought on our sugar cane industry. Our cane growers took a heavy hit to their homes, properties and crops – and it is the duty of my Government to alleviate the suffering of these growers by covering the costs of transportation for all farmers who previously used the Penang Mill,” said the PM. The Prime Minister went on to explain that all farmers who used the Penang Mill should still bring their cane to the Penang Mill to access the free transportation offered by Government.
