140 students for chefs’ challenge

Creator of programme Shailesh Naidu said 15 schools will take part at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

About 140 students are expected to converge at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort for the 5th School Chefs Challenge on July 22. The looked-forward-to event has grown from a one school event. Most of the schools of Nadroga/Navosa province, some from Nadi and possibly a school from Lautoka are joining this year. Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort executive chef Shailesh Naidu who has been the driving force for the event said: “This is our commitment to associate with the community and give something back to our people. “I have put together this programme to showcase an element of our profession through the tourism industry. This is part of supporting our kids. “The event has been growing since day one and anticipati­ng 140 students with parents, school officials and support teams. There will also be hotel guests, industrial invitees and patrons from around the community supporting the event as well.” Mr Naidu said the outline of the actual competitio­n includes 15 schools participat­ing in five different classes.

“Each class will have a 3rd; 2nd and a first place getters with each one of these winners walking away with medals, trophies, certificat­es, vouchers, gift packs and some cash prizes,” he said.

There will also be a lucky dip for all competitor­s as well, another chance for the kids to take home some great prizes. Mr Naidu and his culinary team will chief judge for the event. The event is sponsored by Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and supported by Ram Sami, Fiji Gas, Dannys, Crest Chicken, Farm Fresh, Bakels, Pacific Z-Tralasia, Fiji Water, Fiji Chemicals and Fiji Chefs Associatio­n. The event is scheduled to start at 9am and the prize giving ceremony is expected by 3pm.
