Cop might face dangerous driving charge: Tudravu

APolice officer is facing charges of dangerous driving, after the vehicle he was driving veered off Princes Road in Sawani and ended up in Rewa River early yesterday morning.

According to sources the officer and others who were with him in the vehicle are alleged to have consumed alcohol. But his alcohol blood level was below the prescribed limit, therefore, he will not face charges of drunk driving.

Chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said the officer could instead be charged with dangerous driving. Five people who were in the vehicle escaped serious injuries.

Witnesses say that the vehicle first hit the kilometre marking post and went into the river about three metres from the post it had hit. ACP Tudravu has confirmed that three Police officers and two civil servants were in the vehicle, - four men and a woman. “The Police Officer who was driving the vehicle has been questioned for dangerous driving.

“We are still conducting our investigations,” he said. ACP Tudravu said he could not make further comments because he did not have more details about the accident with him.

“It was around 5:45 am when I heard the bang sound,” a resident Anil Prasad said. “I knew an accident must have occurred. By the time I was nearing the scene, I heard the people who were involved in the accident coming out of the vehicle. They were making so much noise,” he said. Mr Prasad said when he reached the scene with the torch to help them, no one was there. “Someone called the Police and they were at the scene within 20 minutes. We had no idea that the people who were involved in the accident were Police officers. “Some officers who were conducting investigations at the scene had informed us that the victims were Police officers,” he said. Another resident spoke to the Fiji

Sun on the condition of anonymity said: “We were shocked when the Police officers at the scene informed us that the victims were Police officers. “By the time we had come to help the victim, they were not there,” the resident said.
