More than 20 truck drivers in the North have been issued infringement notices for overloading this year. Land Transport Authority (LTA) Northern regional manager Alfred Wiliame said offenders were logging truck drivers from Labasa and cargo truck drivers delivering goods from Viti Levu.
“In excess of one tonne there is a fine of $1000,” Mr Wiliame said.
“So if a driver carries excess of five tonne load, then he will be fined for $5000. “We have booked more than 20 drivers this year during our ongoing enforcement operations in various areas both during day and night.
“After an intensive operation during the first half of this year we have noticed attitudes of truck drivers changed. “Some people complained that logging truck drivers travelled through Labasa Town during the night. We have looked into this and our enforcement officers are continuing with their operations. Definitely, if a driver is caught overloading he will not be spared. “With regards to the sugarcane lorry drivers, we are in discussion with the Fiji Sugar Corporation to see how best we can work together to monitor overloading.”
