Aman is expected to be charged soon for allegedly raping his 11yearold niece in Bua, Vanua Levu. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the suspect allegedly raped his niece on four different occasions between January 2015 to August 2016. “The man is in police custody and will be charged soon,” Ms Naisoro said. “The victim has been discharged from the Labasa Hospital as investigation continues.” Northern Divisional Police Commander (DPC) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) confirmed that the matter was reported at the Nabouwalu Police Station last Friday by a teacher at the victim’s school. While the victim was in school, one of her teachers found her behaving very differently. When questioned the victim confided in her teacher and relayed all that had happened over a year.

This is the second alleged rape incident reported by primary school heads from Bua in three weeks. Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy, after the education forum in Labasa last week, said all the teachers were told by the ministry to be vigilant. When FijiSun contacted Mr Reddy yesterday, he said school heads have been trained on how to assist students who have been victimised.

“As soon as teachers receive information from their students or victim they inform the headteacher or principal who then inform the respective education district office, nearest Police Station and social welfare department,” Mr Reddy said. “We will surely invest more on counselling at schools to assist vulnerable students to open up to their teachers,” he said.

“We do not condone criminal activities.”
