Police swoop on men allegedly holding a meeting at a location in the West
Ten men allegedly part of a group facing sedition charges in court were reportedly arrested while holding a meeting in the Western Division.
It is alleged that they might have breached their bail conditions. The men were still being questioned at the Namaka Police Station in Nadi last night when this edition
went to press.
If they are charged, they are likely to be brought to court tomorrow morning.
It is believed the meeting in question was allegedly held somewhere in Nadi. However, another unconfirmed report said the meeting was allegedly held in Nadroga.
It was still unclear last night as to what was discussed in the said meeting.
A total of 77 people have been charged with sedition and their cases are before the Lautoka High Court. All those charged were granted bail.
Of the total, 16 accused from Nadroga are charged with one count of sedition contrary to Section 67 (1) (a) and inciting communal antagonism contrary to Section 65 (2) (a) of the Crimes Decree 2009. Sixteen from Ra face similar charges. The remaining 45 from Ra also are charged with one count of sedition contrary to Section 67 (1) (a) and one count of urging political violence contrary to Section 65 (1) (b) of the Crimes Decree 2009 Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro declined to comment until information about the arrests is confirmed.
