More internet users from next year

Indications are of an increase in internet users by 10 to 15 per cent next year. This was highlighted by the Vodafone Fiji chief commercial officer Ronald Prasad at the BSP Fiji Human Resources Institute national convention at the Warwick Resort. Mr Prasad said this, however would help the Human Resources practitioners understand more about the trend in technology and use it to their company’s advantage. ““When people are accessing information they go to your website and find out what your company is all about, what type of careers do you offer, what type of vacancies exists and they are able to access information really quickly,” he said. Mr Prasad said in order to attract more viewers to their website, they had to capture the attention of their audience.

“The concentration span has significantly reduced. If you are not able to capture their attention within that 15- 20 minutes, you will lose them. “And on the website it is much lower than 5 minutes. So these are some of the learnings that we need to take in and bring into our strategies.” Mr Prasad said what they have seen within Fiji and within the Vodafone Fiji network is the number of active internet users. “In Fiji mobile phone penetration today is at 120 per cent. “There are more sims than the number of people in Fiji. However, the internet penetration is sitting at around 65 per cent.” Mr Prasad added, by next year March or April, Vodafone Fiji will take the internet penetration up to about 70 or 75 per cent.

“That means 75 per cent of all Fijians will have access to all information and internet around the globe on their mobile phones.

“Thirty-five per cent rate on the number of active social media users that are a huge increase.

“So every individual in Fiji is actually jumping on to social media and social media is going to bring in a number of changes like snapchat and all that.

“So the mobile subscriptions are still growing. People are growing from using basic phones to feature phones and feature phones to smartphones,” he added. “There is a phenomenal smartphone growth in the number of mobile social users so these are people that access information and social media on their phones.”
