AB Jone Vos­aboto’s fa­ther

The fam­ily of Repub­lic of Fiji Mil­i­tary Forces, (Navy) Able Sea­man (AB) Jone Vos­aboto bid him farewell yes­ter­day as he left for a year of duty in Iraq. AB Vos­aboto is part of the Fi­jian guard force un­der the United Na­tions As­sis­tance Mis­sion For Iraq (UNAMI). His wife, Ruci Rakoto was grate­ful for the op­por­tu­nity given to his hus­band to serve. This is AB Vos­aboto’s sec­ond tour of duty. The first was in 2012 in Si­nai. “He had wanted to go for his mis­sion with the troops in Iraq and af­ter a lot of test and trials he has made,” Ms Rakoto said. Fam­ily mem­bers from Navala vil­lage in Ba were also at the Nadi Air­port to say good-bye. “We are all just very proud of his se­lec­tion,” said his fa­ther Ener­iko Nakubulevu. The 60-year-old was not wor­ried but in fact happy that the youngest of his three chil­dren was liv­ing his dreams of thrills and ex­cite­ments of be­ing a sol­dier. “He al­ways wanted to be a solider and we have to be happy but more proud of the fact that he has been tasked with such re­spon­si­bil­ity of serv­ing un­der the RFMF in an­other coun­try where there is a need for our men,” Mr Nakubulevu said. AB Vos­aboto’s mother, Elena Lawai-Nakubulevu was proud yet shed a few tears af­ter bid­ding her son farewell for a year. She said she would pray for his son ev­ery day un­til he re­turned. AB Vos­aboto has three chil­dren who will be wait­ing for his re­turn ea­gerly, next year. He was amongst the 22 RFMF sol­diers who have de­parted for Iraq yes­ter­day. More are ex­pected to de­part next week Sun­day. UNAMI (United Na­tions As­sis­tance Mis­sion for Iraq) was formed by the United Na­tions in Se­cu­rity Coun­cil Res­o­lu­tion 1500 on 14 Au­gust 2003 and sup­ports na­tional de­vel­op­ment ef­forts on po­lit­i­cal, elec­toral, and hu­man­i­tar­ian lev­els through­out Iraq..
