Yasawa Reports Rough Seas

- CHARLES CHAMBERS charles.chambers@fijisun.com.fj

Rough seas surrounded the Yasawa Group yesterday, but no significant strong winds or heavy rains were experienced. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa manager Lusi Mock said they only started experiencing consistent rain, though not heavy, near midday. “We have not had any strong wind, although it was a bit breeze last night (Thursday), but nothing much after that,” Ms Mock said. “Actually there is hardly any wind right now.” Ms Mock said the seas were very rough and no one had ventured out. She said the resort, which had nine rooms, was empty because all flights to Yasawa Island, had been postponed since Wednesday. “Perhaps we will see tomorrow, how the weather is shaping up and decided whether we can bring the guests across,” she said. Meanwhile Coconut Beach Resort owner Alex Negrioski said it was raining when contacted at around 2.30pm yesterday. “It has not been as heavy as expected except for last night which was a bit heavy,” Mr Negrioski said. He said the wind was starting to pick up by yesterday afternoon. “Right now the wind is about 15 knots,” he said. Karunesh Kumar of Plantation Island Resort, in the Mamanuca Group, said there was no strong wind at present and rain was not heavy. However he said heavy cloud cover could bring a lot of rain later yesterday evening. “A lot of our guests had checked out earlier before the bad weather started, but some have remained,” Mr Kumar said. He said despite the rough seas, they did not anticipate any problems. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
