Fulton Hogan workers fix road

While most Fijians are inside the comfort of their homes keeping warm in this storm, some are working around the clock to ensure that infrastructure is accessible and safe.
yesterday spotted Fulton Hogan Hiways workers at Farm Road in Davuilevu, Nausori. in the cold doing what they could to make the road accessible again. Also at the top of their list was helping residents walk through a portion of the road which had collapsed. It was successfuly sealed yesterday. But before this, workers were assisting residents with their shopping onto the other side of the road. Access to Farm Road was closed because a portion of the road had collapsed on Thursday night. Fulton Hogan Hiways site supervisor August Williams said the workers were not only working on the roads but also assisting community members. “I have 10 of my men on the site who are working to make a temporary access for the residents of Farm Road,” Mr Williams said. “In between, we have many residents trying to cross the landslide area to go to their homes or town and I am happy to see my men assisting the residents to cross,” Mr Williams said.
He said they have installed eight new culverts to provide a temporary access for the residents. “We do not know how many old culverts are underneath right now but we have installed eight new culverts to provide access for the residents of Farm Road. “We have requested the public to pass through in light motor vehicle as this is a temporary access,” Mr Williams said. He said one of the reasons for the landslide was due to poor drainage in the area. “When we came to start the work on the access pathway, we had to firstly remove all the rubbish, tires and broken furniture from the river and the old culverts that was stuck and caused the blockage,” Mr Williams said. He appreciated his team for working to provide the access road despite the rainy weather and provide assistance to the residents to cross over. Assistant Minister for Local Government, Infrastructure and Transport, Vijay Nath said the work done by Fulton Hogan Hiways was much appreciated. “I thank the FHH team for working in the rain and to reconstruct the road for residents as they have had to walk through about two kilometres through Sasawira to go to their homes,” Mr Nath said.
