No Race Track For Car Club In 2017

The Fiji Car Club will start the New Year without a race track. This was confirmed yesterday by Fiji Car Club (FCC) president Raizal Haniff. “Nanuku Aerodome landowners Nanuku Resort has decided not to renew their contract with the Fiji Car Club,” Haniff.

“Next year is going to be a challenge for us because our agreement with the landowners for the Nanuku Aerodome in Pacific Harbour has ended. The landowners, Nanuku Resort, is not willing to renew the contract so as we stand now, we don’t have a race track. They have basically given us the boot to move even though we had two years left in the contract, they have decided to pay us out of the contract and there is nothing we can do about it.” An emergency meeting with the executives is expected to be held next week regarding the future of the FCC but Haniff has assured its members and the public that they will not give up. “The executives have worked hard over the years to bring the FCC to where it is today. We have just worked too hard to let it go. “We will be having an emergency meeting next week to decide the future of the club. I think the way to go now is to own a track that our club can call our own. But it is an expensive affair and we are looking at close to $800,000 to buy a land and develop it to make it into a racing track.

“At the moment, our first priority is to look for a land and once we do that then we can look of ways to raise funds to build a track. We will also try to have meetings with the relevant authorities if we can race on a public road.”

Despite the difficult challenge next year for Fiji Car Club, Haniff says, they have had a successful

2016. “It has been a very successful year for us and we are happy that the club and the events have grown,” he said. Edited by Leone Cabenatabua
