Sub-divisional Health Sister Sainiana Tunakau said the staff of the Ba Health Centre had to work hard to wrest the Best Health Centre Award from last year’s winners during the divisional Awards Night at the Xavier College auditorium on Friday. “Last year another health centre won this award, however this year we worked harder to claim this award,” she said.

Sister Tunakau said the staff at the health centre worked tirelessly even through the challenges that Tropical Cyclone Winston brought with it. “During Winston some parts of the Ba Medical Centre were blown away and some walls also got damaged. However we still managed to provide medical facilities to our patients with the co-operation of our staff.”

Chief guest Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Alex O’Connor said team work and strategy building were techniques to achieve success in the medical sector.

“It is always important to regroup, rethink and strategise and move with more vigour and more passion,” he said. He reminded the Ba medical staff that hospitals were a mutual ground and barrier free for the staff and patients to relate. “Health services should be based on mutual grounds of fairness, respect, equality and dignity, in short FRED,” he said. He was also very proud of the efforts of the medical staff in Ba who worked diligently during Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Ba Medical Board of Visitors representative, Dr Maria Doton said that the medical staff should be proud of their profession. “Medical staff should be proud and thankful to the lord that he has given us this skill and professionalism as an extension of his own healing hands,” she said. She also saluted the Ba subdivision medical staff for their hard work throughout the year especially during and after Cyclone Winston. Ba Mission Hospital’s Sister Suruj Wati Sharma was awarded with the Long Service Award for working in the profession for more than 30 years. She said this type of award should be held in all sub-divisions as it boosts the morale of the medical staff to perform better at work. Edited by Rusiate Mataika
