We salute our Security forces for keeping us safe from danger

-

During natural disasters, one’s first instinct is to secure their homes and ensure the wellbeing of their families. But, there are people among us, who put the call of the nation as top priority. In recent days, we have seen two examples of that. There are people putting the call of duty above their personal wellbeing or the wellbeing of their families. Private Peceli Nakelo whose selfless acts were highlighted by Fiji Sun in our publication yesterday is one such man. Private Nakelo headed to Navua to help flood victims. He did this while his own family battled with raising floodwaters at his home in Naila, in Tailevu. Instead of opting to stay back to help his own family, Private Nakelo was out there helping others. And, today we have highlighted the heroic efforts of Sergeant Rakesh Chandra who assisted a man and his son swim to safety as Rakiraki Town was submerged in floodwaters. While some cynics will be quick to point out that the two were doing their duties- we should take a step back and reflect on whether we would have had the courage to do the same. Then we have hundreds of Republic of Fiji Military Forces engineers who stay months away from their families rebuilding schools, hospitals and assisting others to lead a better life. More needs to be done to recognise the selfless efforts of our security forces. We salute their efforts in keeping the nation safe in trying times.
