Pune has highest organ donations in state
Pune: From 16 in 2015 to 58 till December in 2016, cadaver organ donations have shown a three - fold increase, pushing up Pune’s ranking to the first place, beating Mumbai (54). Mumbai had been recording the highest number of organ donation for many years till 2015.
This is the first time that Pune reached the top spot in the state. A cadaveric donation takes place when the family of a patient, who has been declared brain dead, agrees to donate his or her vital organs, mainly the kidneys, liver and heart.
Officials and experts involved in organ donation procedures attribute this healthy trend to the state government’s approach to encourage organ donation along with rising awareness among people to donate organs. “The rise in unprecedented. Pune has left Mumbai behind in organ donation in Maharashtra,” Aarti Gokhale, transplant co-ordinator of Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Committee (ZTCC), Pune branch, said. The committee, a registered body with the charity commissioner, is formed by the appropriate authority through a government resolution. Its promotes cadaver organ transplant. There are four ZTCC in Maharashtra in Pune, Mumbai, Aurangabad and Nagpur. Organ donation at other ZTCC centres has picked up only this year.
