Defying the odds to graduate
I’m just happy with what he’s achieved and he has made the family proud: mum
Despite the travelling difficulties caused by the floods, Ana Naicegucegu (wearing garland), and her family made a special trip to get her to her graduation ceremony yesterday. Ms Naicegucegu graduated from the Fiji National University with a Bachelor in Engineering with a double major in Telecommunications and Networking. Her family made the trip from Vuniniudrovu Village, Sawani, for her special day.
It was a proud moment yesterday for Vishal Nagaiya as he graduated with a Certificate IV in Automotive Engineering from the College of Engineering, Science and Technology. Originally from Tabia, Labasa, Mr Nagaiya moved to Suva in 2014 and had to stay with relatives to pursue his studies. His mum, Sushila Nagaiya and younger sister Zoya Ali travelled all the way from Labasa to be part of the event; and his mum was lost for words when asked about Vishal’s achievement. “I’m just happy with what he’s achieved and he has made the family proud, even though his dad couldn’t come because of the bad weather,” Ms Nagaiya said after the graduation in Suva. Ms Ali said her brother’s hard work has finally paid off and it was worth all the sacrifices he made especially moving away from home. After the ceremony he was heading straight for a job interview.
The 20-year-old will be pursuing further studies in the same field and aspires to become a senior mechanic one day. Mr Nagaiya was among 450 students who graduated from the Fiji National University’s College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the College of Engineering, Science and Technology.
