Baulevu, Koronivia Rd to be Sealed
Residents of Baulevu and Koronivia Road can look forward to their roads sealed in 2017. This was confirmed by the Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Vijay Nath. Mr Nath said this work was being done under the Fiji Roads Authority sealed road rehabilitation programme. He said this work was scheduled to be done earlier and this did not eventuate given the devastation caused by Tropical Depression 04F. This has caused most of the works to be put on hold and resources were deployed to affected areas. “Large communities including schools are situated along these two roads. “Baulevu Road is another busy road that has three schools located along it. This road also serves the villages of Naganivatu, Nakini, Natoaika and Deladamanu.”
He said all site testing and design was has been completed and preliminary road work was already underway in the area with the contractor currently carrying out drainage work. The road reconstruction and sealing work to commence in March. “The Koronivia Road rehabilitation project, starting at the Kings Road junction, will have approximately 1.5km sealed. This will join up with the 850-metre section or renewed seal in front of the residential area that was completed in late 2016. “The road serves more than 4000 residents who commute to work and school daily. In addition, the farming community supplies root crops and vegetables at urban and surrounding local markets.
“The test pits and material laboratory testing was completed last month to enable the pavement design to be completed this week. The pavement reconstruction and sealing work on Koronivia Road will commence next month. The dust issue is a key challenge on unsealed roads across Fiji. “Through the targeted sealing programme, Government and the Fiji Roads Authority hope to reduce dust nuisance for communities and improve the travel experience for commuters.” Mr Nath added that it is advisable for motorists to observe road signs and cooperate in the duration of the above works.
